Up is an animation-comedy movie created by Pixar, which is a quality mark for animation. It grossed over $731 million worldwide, making it a 6th best grossing movie of the year. Up is a best animation movie of the year.

4. District 9 (2009)

District 9 is a science-fiction movie directed by Neill Blomkamp. It tells a story about pathetic alien creatures who had an accident in Johannesburg, South Africa. The story is told in documentary manner - an unexpected one for most sci-fi movies.

Star Trek (2009) is the eleventh film based on of the original Star Trek television series created in '60s. If you are a fan of original series, you most likely love this film too. It is the thirteenth-highest-grossing film of 2009.

6. The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)

The Secret in Their Eyes is an Argentinian crime thriller movie and a best Foreign movie of 2009. It was also awarded the Goya Award for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film of 2009. Everybody who likes a non-Hollywood production must watch this film. You won't find it in a top grossing lists, but it is really one of the best movies of 2009.

Moon is a best British movie of 2009. It is a science fiction story about a frustrating three-year work in a moon base.

9. The Hangover (2009)

The Hangover is a best comedy of 2009. The movie storyline follows four friends who travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Next morning friends wake up with a huge hangover not remembering a thing. The Hangover earned over $467 million worldwide.

What the Movie "District 9" Says About Humankind's Ability to Deal With an Alien Race

"What if" and isn't that always the question? What if an alien species that was of equal intelligence, or greater intelligence than that of mankind were to visit the Earth; how would we go about this opportunity? Would we immediately exploit their advanced technology to use in weapon designs?

Would we treat them with respect, or would we immediately set up a "them versus us" scenario? Would we block them off from the rest of the world, force them into a small space? Would we help them, or would we treat them as we often treat ourselves? Yes, these are lots of questions.

And if these are things that you might like to think about, or consider the philosophy behind it all, well then there is a movie that I would highly like to recommend to you, the movie is called District 9. Indeed, it says a lot about how humanity treats our own species, and it does so in a setting in the future, and begs the question, if we don't treat ourselves well, how would we treat an alien race?

Indeed, this was probably the best movie for fall of 2009. The science fiction action is absolutely incredible, and the depiction of the alien technology is an extension of our own technologies off into the future, not more than a couple of decades from now.

In fact, I not only recommend that you go see this movie, but I recommend you take one of your intellectual friends, and then discuss the movie after it is over, and maybe it will open your eyes a bit. This movie makes us all look into our own mirror of humanity. And it's about time we start looking too. Please consider all this.

What the Movie "District 9" Says About Culture, Racism, and Labeling

The Movie District 9 was one of the best movies in the fall of 2009. The movie takes place in Johannesburg South Africa where an alien ship has landed and offloaded 1 million aliens. Immediately, a fence is put around their location, and it turns into a huge urban slum. In fact, the pictures are reminiscent of some of the worst urban slums on this planet; the Kibera Slum in Nairobi Kenya for instance.

Although, this is a science fiction thriller with some great action scenes, and lots of alien technology, it is also a metaphor or allegory for how humanity treats itself, and some of the problems in our own mirror, questions, challenges, and problems that we need to deal with; things which affect millions and millions of people across the planet.

Since the aliens in District 9 resemble Prawns, that is what they are called. Yes, it is a picture of racism and culture labeling. It's the same thing we do to each other, to dehumanize nationalities, races, and cultures that are different from ourselves. In fact, in the Movie District 9 it shows we are shown our own hypocrisy, and how bad we are treating our own species.

This is one movie, which everyone should see, and it is well worth watching with lots of very well done cinema technology work, but more importantly it is one that makes you think, and question what we are really doing, why we are doing it, and what we need to do to change.

One of the underlining themes that I got out of the movie was; "don't judge another, until you walk a mile in their shoes," and I think you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about after you see the movie. Please consider all this.

District 9 - The Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Ever?

2009 is rapidly coming to a close, which can only mean one thing. Hollywood's award season will soon be kicking into high gear all across the film industry. Movie studios have already begun their ferocious marketing campaigns for this year's biggest Oscar contenders in hopes of persuading the Academy in their favor. Unfortunately, one movie that will most likely be missing from the Best Picture Oscar ballot this March is District 9, the Peter Jackson produced sci-fi masterpiece that was released at the end of this past summer. District 9, which makes it's way to DVD and Blu-ray on December 22, is by far my favorite film of 2009 and in hopes of spreading the word to people who have not witnessed this film in all of it's incredible "awesomeness," here's a quick review.
With the movie's intriguing premise and that absolutely genius "Non-Human" marketing campaign, District 9 quickly became my must-see movie of the last summer. And even though I was well aware of the fact that I was going to dig this movie before I even bought my ticket and opened my Milk Duds, I had no possible way of knowing that I would fall so madly in love with it. Never mind the fact that District 9 quickly secured the top spot as my favorite science fiction film of all time (and I've seen some great ones), it might very well have become one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, period. Seriously, it was that good!
The film begins as sort of a mockumentary that brings viewers up to date on the film's alternate world where we learn that an alien spacecraft appeared in South Africa 28 years ago and apparently broke down right over the city
of Johannesburg. With the ship suspended over the city showing no signs of life for three months, human beings decide to take it upon themselves to make their way into the ship in an attempt to make first contact. What they found was millions of malnourished members of an alien race on the verge of death. With no other choice, humans transport the extra terrestrials down to earth and move them into a squalid, overcrowded slum in the Johannesburg area that government officials refer to as District 9, so the name of the film isn't just a clever title.
The aliens, or "prawns" as they're referred to in the film, are stranded on earth with no way of getting back to their home planet and quickly become a nuisance to the human residents of Johannesburg. The government contracts the zillion-dollar corporation Multi-National United (MNU) to relocate the 1.3 million prawns to the new but far from improved District 10. Heading the operation for MNU is the educated dimwit Wikus Van De Merwe, the film's ultimate protagonist, who believes he has the giant task under control. But after foolishly exposing himself to a biological alien chemical, Wikus's DNA becomes infused with that of the alien race's and he slowly begins to transform into a prawn. Desperate to stop the transformation, Wikus must seek refuge in District 9 where he befriends an intelligent prawn who holds the key to curing Wikus's anomalous condition.
With the orgy of unnecessary remakes, boring sequels and franchise reboots that Hollywood has been partaking in for the last few years; District 9's most refreshing attribute is the film's awe-inspiring originality. Neil Blomkamp, the director and co-writer, is simply astonishing with his feature-length debut and will no doubt be finding plenty of work in Hollywood for years to come. The 29-year-old (only three years older then me, which thoroughly bums me out) who is actually from Johannesburg, South Africa, seamlessly weaves both the documentary and traditional narrative styles of camera work together, with no apparent pattern or motivation, to create an absolute thrill ride of a movie unlike anything you have ever seen.
Now, if originality is the film's most refreshing attribute, then the story it has to tell is its most powerful. It does not take an advanced intellectual brain to realize that there are some serious political undertones to this movie. There is a specific message that this film wanted to get across, but it does so by not once preaching to the audience. Instead, it keeps everything within the confines of the sci-fi action realm by making entertainment the primary objective and let's viewers interpret the message for themselves. And the end result to this method is simply fantastic.
The characters (both human and alien) of District 9 are just one more positive element that this film has to offer. Wikus, who is played perfectly by newcomer Sharlto Copely, is a humorous office drone that you love one minute and a despicable human being that you despise the next. His prawn confidant, the aptly named Christopher Johnson, is a tough-as-nails alien who is sickened at what his people have been subjected to on earth and just wants to get himself and his young son back to their home.
This movie is not War of the Worlds. It's not Independence Day. It's not like anything you've ever seen before, which is a key reason why it's so great. It takes place in a realistic world with believable situations and outcomes. It's been four long months since I saw District 9 and I personally can't wait to own this film on DVD. I feel I've done a pretty good job on informing you just how amazing I found this movie. But who the hell am I, right? If you like smart science fiction with balls-to-the-wall action and breathtaking special effects, see District 9 and gauge an opinion for yourself. The movie will most likely go down as one of the best movies of 2009, regardless of what the award season tells you. And if you're like me, it will seriously make you reconsider your best movies of all-time list. I'm telling you, it's that good!

The Best Films From 2009

It may be 2010, but there really haven't been any great movies yet this year. If you didn't get a chance to see many movies in 2009, there are a few that are worth your while.

Since the Oscars expanded to 10 entries for best picture, it's harder to sort the good from the bad. Here are some of my favorite films from 2009.

The Hurt Locker was an extraordinary movie. There really haven't been any great Iraq War movies until this one. It tells the story of a bomb squad member in Iraq who plays by his own rules. It is a gripping and suspenseful thriller, and while I don't think it should have won Best Picture, easily was one of my top 5 favorites of the year.

If you haven't seen Avatar, you must be living under a rock. What an experience this movie is. James Cameron continues to push the boundaries of movies and showed u something we had never seen before with the world of Pandora.

People complained that the plot of Avatar was unoriginal, but that's not the point of the movie. I was never bored for one second with this one.

The award for my favorite movie of 2009 goes to District 9.

I love everything about this movie. I love how this movie was directed by a relatively inexperienced director (Neil Blompkamp) with a first time actor in Sharlto Copley. This movie had a fraction of the budget of so many bad action flicks that come out of Hollywood, and it blows most of them away.

This was a movie I never wanted to end; It provides a realistic look into what an alien invasion could look like. District 9 was action packed, suspenseful, funny at times and heartbreaking at others. I never knew where this movie was going next and I cannot wait to see it again.

The Last Decade's Greatest Sports Movies

If you like movies, then chances are you like sports movies. Sports films are incredibly fun to watch, as they are often based on true stories and provide a good balance of action, suspense, letdown and joy. While

Hollywood churns out sequel after sequel, we rarely get a good sports film these days. That's not to say there haven't been some great ones, however.

The following are some of the greatest sports movies from the past decade.

When it comes to great movies about football from the last 2000-2009, one would be foolish not to include Disney's Remember The Titans on their list. The true story of the first racially integrated football team stars Denzel Washington and the always great Will Patton.

It is just me or do football movies often end up being the best sports movies? 2009's The Blind Side garnered serious acclaim, even getting an Oscar nominee for Best Picture of the Year. Sandra Bullock finally found the role that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, and she deserved it.

As is often the case with sports films, Miracle is a movie that is based on an event that meant so much more than just a game. The USA vs USSR hockey game that this film is based on gave Americans all over the world hope in one of the most incredible Olympic moments in history.

Million Dollar Baby is another film that definitely makes my list. This is an incredible film, directed by the great Clint Eastwood, which is the story of a female boxer who has nothing to lose (played by Hillary Swank) and a coach (Eastwood) who is reluctant to take her on. Amazing movie.

Another boxing film that is a great watch is Cinderella Man. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Russell Crowe and Rene Zelwegger, this film had Oscar potential written all over it. Unfortunately that was not the case, but this film, based on the boxer Jim Braddock is awesome.

Due to a a general lack of time, as well as various health issues, I've fallen more than a bit behind in my movie journals. In an effort to catch-up, I thought I'd combine my take on the last 16 films I saw in one quick effort...So here goes:

BROKEN EMBRACES - December 22, 2009 at The Royal theater in West L.A. - Pedro Almodovar's latest film is part masterpiece, part head scratcher. Convoluted plot has something to do with a film director gone blind, and the exploration of his tragic past. I love a good complex plot, yet not when I get lost along the way. The ending is awful, and makes no sense. Yet, this is an Almodovar film...so you still get a compelling and interesting movie...even if it doesn't all add up in the end. Perhaps I need to see it again...

HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS (2006) - is a movie I watched on DVD December 27, 2009 with my nieces in while I was on vacation. I was asleep through most of it to be honest with you (blame it on the comfortable couch, jet lag, and lack of interest)...yet it seemed like a cute story of a new kid in school who is challenged by a bully to eat fried worms. In the end, the new kid triumphs, the bully gets his...and everyone is happy...at least I think that's what happened.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL - December 28, 2009 at The Ramsey Cinema in Ramsey, NJ - another movie I watched with my nieces...and fell asleep a few times. From what I gathered, it was better than the original movie...Story involves the chipmunks saving the day from an evil manager (David Cross), who works with a female chipmunk group. Not much else I can recall...My attention was mostly focused on my nieces, who seemed to have enjoyed the movie...

IT'S COMPLICATED - January 3, 2010 at the AMC Century 15 - Nancy Meyers latest tale of wealthy adults with problems has its entertaining moments, yet overall rings false on all fonts. Some of it is just plain awful. How boring to say that "Meryl Streep is great" in the movie, yet she is, as is Alec Baldwin, yet Steve Martin is a bore, who adds nothing. Though better than her last movie THE HOLIDAY...IT'S COMPLICATED is still ridden with problems...and never approaching the quality of Nancy Meyers best films WHAT WOMEN WANT and SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE..

SHERLOCK HOLMES - January 3, 2010 at the Grauman's Chinese Theater. I wanted to like Guy Ritchie's take on the old Arthur Conan Doyle tale...yet I just didn't. The plot is too complex for its own good...and I was often lost. Robert Downey Jr's British accent is terrible, and often very hard to understand, and Rachel McAdams was simply miscast. Story involves Holmes battling an evil force (Mark Strong) terrorizing London. With the help of Watson (Jude Law), Holmes goes to extreme ends in order to uncover the truth and stop a diabolical plan. What should have been a great adventure film, ends up as a confusing, twisting, frustrating, and babbling set piece with not enough of everything...

DAYBREAKERS - January 15, 2010 at the AMC Broadway theater in Santa Monica. Great premise, lackuster movie. Story is set in a world taken over by vampires. Humans are a rare breed, and are hunted down for their blood. Ethan Hawke plays a scientist vampire who's working on a "cure" to help all of the vampires in the world feed off of synthetic blood...When he encounters a group of renegade humans, his life is changed by their secret discovery. Lots of blood and such...yet the story, as presented by The Spierig brothers is clunky and dumb. The direction is cheap, and undermines the story as a whole...which is a shame. Why take a B-movie idea and make it as a D movie? That quandary, like the film, doesn't make much sense...

THE BOOK OF ELI - January 16, 2010 at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre. I was very impressed with this movie. The Hughes Brothers did an excellent job with Gary Whitta's intriguing script. The score, Don Burgess's dead-toned cinematography, and the overall feel of the movie added an extra depth to an otherwise depressing movie. Denzel Washington plays a mysterious loner who travels the plains of a post-apocalyptic world carrying a book that may help mankind. Blocking his way is evil Gary Oldman...who wants the book for his own ends, and will stop at nothing to get it. Aside from a miscast Mila Kunis, all of the performances in ELI are solid. Despite my initial misgivings over director and cast, I was pleasantly surprised at how good BOOK OF ELI is...

YOUTH IN REVOLT - January 17, 2010 at the Arclight Hollywood - Based on Gustin Nash's excellent adaptation of C.D. Payne's novel, YOUTH IN REVOLT is a highly enjoyable sex comedy. Helping matters is Miguel Arteta spiriited direction, which faithfully brings life to the story. Also helping matters is Michael Cera, a comic genius of sorts....who's distinctive manner is so mischievously coy and desperately innocent that one can't help but like him no matter what he does. Cera stars as a shy, yet precocious teenager who will do anything for love...even if that means stealing a car, setting fire to the town, lying, cheating, stealing, and even (attempting to) fake his own death. With a great supporting cast including Jean Smart, Fred Willard, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta and Justin Long, YOUTH IN REVOLT always entertains. Not a film for everyone, yet I liked it a lot...

LEGION - January 23, 2010 at the Arclight Hollywood - Another case where the film does not match the expectations of the premise. Paul Bettany plays a rogue angel who comes down to Earth in order to save mankind after God has marked man for annihilation. In a set-up similar to RIO BRAVO and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, the rogue angel sets up camp in a small diner (with a bunch of locals and a pregnant woman)...and defends himself against God's army of evil angels. Apparently the key to the whole event rests in the life of the pregnant woman's unborn child. If they can hold off the evil angels long enough...the baby will be born safely, and mankind may have a chance to survive. Though not a bad film,LEGION stifles itself in banal dialogue and a setting that seems too small in scale given the parameters of the story. The casting does not help matters...with Dennis Quaid and Lucas Black giving lackluster performances. That said, LEGION is fairly entertaining for what it is...

A SINGLE MAN - January 27, 2010 at The Landmark Theatre in West LA. - Didn't particularly care for fashion designer Tom Ford directorial debut...an overwrought, over-stylized downer of film about a middle-aged man morning the loss of his dead gay lover. Colin Firth is terrific, I will say that...yet the rest of the film seemed to ramble on and on with its overstated take on loss. Julianne Moore plays a pathetic British drunk for some reason, and the rest of cast look like they just escaped from a copy of Men's Vogue. What starts out as an interesting period piece and character study soon turns into a festival of the contrite and absurd...with an ending that is unintentionally laughable.

THE YOUNG VICTORIA - January 29, 2010 at the Laemmle Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica - A good film, filled with plenty of interesting things to look at, think about, and discover. Emily Blunt plays the young Victoria, soon-to-be Queen of England with a strong combination of strength and vulnerability. Director Jean-Marc Vallee presents a story full of drama and romance...You could feel the pressure Victoria was under as everyone around her wanted their piece of the Royal pie. You root for her, as well as for her romance and marriage to Prince Albert (Rupert Friend). I found myself getting very involved in the story...and looked forward to each and every beat....enjoying the ride along the way. Supporting cast is stellar with Miranda Richardson, Mark Strong, Jim Broadbent, and Paul Bettany...If you like intriguing period costume dramas, with a snatch of romance...you'll most likely enjoy THE YOUNG VICTORIA.

EDGE OF DARKNESS - January 30, 2010 at the Arclight Hollywood - A simple revenge story told in the most convoluted way possible. Why do filmmakers insist upon throwing so many plot points at you that you can't possibly follow what's going on? The story is simple enough, a Boston police officer (played by Mel Gibson) seeks revenge for the murder of his daughter. Yet along the way, he goes on a dark journey filled with scared informants and villains with gigantic black hats. Though entertaining at times, I found some of Mel Gibson's actions highly questionable...and at other times, just plain stupid. Ray Winstone plays a cleaner of sorts for the corrupt end of our government...who's motives are never quite known...and Danny Huston plays. what else?...the villain. Directed with gusto by Martin Campbell, EDGE OF DARKNESS succeeds as a compelling story, yet fails in the execution of it.

SUICIDE KINGS (1997) - January 30, 2010 - watched this one on DVD on my computer. A rather tepid film about a group of dumb young men from wealthy families who kidnap a mobster in order to use his connections to help recover the kidnapped sister of one of the men. Yet it isn't long before things get out of hand, and mayhem ensues. Despite strong performances by Christopher Walken (as the mobster) and Dennis Leary, SUICIDE KINGS is a dud through and through. Director Peter O'Fallon (who happens to be the father of one of my co-workers) tries hard, yet can't keep the silly story afloat long enough for you to care. Aside from being conceptually dumb, the film also fails because the actors in the story are so unlikable...each one portrays a different variation of jerk...making the on-screen interaction between them very dull. The ending doesn't make any sense, yet neither does the entire film...

A TO ZEPPELIN (2004) - January 30, 2010 - Watched this on a free Netflix steam on my computer. Caught this Led Zeppelin documentary by way of curiosity, yet was pleased to find some interesting footage on there. There seem to be a 101 unauthorized Led Zeppelin documentaries out there...so at first I was hesitant to watch (what I thought would be) a poorly put-together ripp-off...Yet in the end, I was glad I took a look. Through good interviews with big players in the Zeppelin story, I was impressed with what I saw. For die-hard Zeppelin fans like myself...the interviews presented in A TO ZEPPELIN are worth their weight in gold...Chris Deja, Lori Maddox, Jim McCarty, Simon Kirke, Richard Cole, Pamela Des Barres, Terry Reid and more...I wouldn't say I learned anything new...yet hearing the stories from some of the people who were there was fascinating...

HARRY AND WALTER GO TO NEW YORK (1976) - January 31, 2010 - Another movie I watched on my computer via Netflix stream. This was a movie my parents took me to when I was 7 or 8 years old. I always recalled scenes where they clink their glasses in a fancy restaurant...otherwise the movie is pretty bad. Under direction from Mark Rydell, James Caan and Elliott Gould do their best song and dance through a thin plot revolving around a bank robbery/revenge scheme by master thief Michael Caine. Caan and Gould are the bumbling idiot twins who always seem to get in trouble in the prison yard as well as the dining hall. Diane Keaton plays the bleeding-heart liberal/love interest who plans to use the robbery to help feed the poor. Charles Durning plays the gruff and corrupt bank manager Leslie Ann Warren plays the vapid stage actress. Burt Young plays the tough but accommodating prison warden, etc...Great cast, its a shame they didn't have a great movie to match...

MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939) - February 2, 2010 - Yet another movie I watched on my computer via Netflix stream. This was the first time I had seen Frank Capra's classic tale of Washington politics and corruption, and I must say I was not impressed. Tale of a naive young senator forced into the limelight of the Washington political machine didn't make too much sense to me. Jimmy Stewart, as the young Jefferson Smith, does a fine job....yet I never felt this character was a character at all...If anything, Jefferson Smith seemed to represent some sort of ideal...which is fine and all, yet where was the character?

Confusing matters is Smith's relationship with his mentor/antagonist Senator Joseph Harrison Paine (played by Claude Rains)...a relationship sewn together by a very thin thread...ready to come apart at any second. I kept waiting for something great to happen, yet it never does. The love story is weak, and contrived...and the famous "filibuster scene" left me cold. The ending is laughably absurd, and very anticlimactic. Don't get me wrong, I did not hate MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON...it's just that my expectation were sky high, given its reputation as a classic and all....Who knows? Maybe, just maybe, this movie will fall into the category of Films That I Hate...Then Later Love...

Rudy is another football movie that 100 percent makes the cut. Rudy takes us back to a different time in Notre Dame football history and through one man's remarkable journey to conquer his goals. Another movie that is suitable for the whole family.

Remember The Titans may oddly enough be my favorite Disney film of all. This movie is just awesome. If you have never seen this one, you are missing out. This film is one of Denzel Washington's best performances as Herman Boone.

Well, I believe it is because folks have missed the point in the movie, and not allowed themselves to consider the philosophical argument that it puts forth.

After all, this is more than just a science fiction flick, much the same way that Matrix was much more than just an action movie. I'd recommend anyone who is into robotics, IT, computer centric networks, or military tech go see this movie, as well as anyone with an intellectual mind willing to do some stretching exercises on such an interesting and probable future. Please consider all this.

Quentin Tarantino is an American film director and screenwriter who is most known for his nonlinear storylines and aestheticization of violence. Each of seven sequences were ordered chronologically and often times overlapped using different points of view. It is described as a circular narrative. This movie stars John Travolta, Samual L. This film won countless awards including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. With that said it id one of the most controversial yet inspiring films of our time.

Kill Bill Part I and II, 2003, 2004: Released as two separate "volumes," this four hour long epic film is one of Tarantino's most celebrated films. Starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and the "Crazy 88," this movie is a revenge drama that pays homage to earlier film genres such as Hong Kong martial arts films, exploitation films, Japanese Chanbara, and Italian spaghetti westerns. Filming took place in California, Texas, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Mexico and it the move heavily uses aestheticization of violence. The Kill Bill epic film is a nonlinear narrative which is common for Tarantino however unlike the film, its synopsis is presented chronologically. Uma Thurman won many awards for her lead role and the films were very popular at the MTV Movie Awards in 2004 and 2005 nominated for best movie, best fight, and best acting and directing roles to name a few.

Inglourious Basterds, 2009: Tarantino actually considers the script for this movie his masterpiece. Starring Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, and Melanie Laurent, this is the director's highest grossing film yet. The film was released in August of 2009 by Universal Pictures and The Weinstein Company. The film is set in German-occupied France and tells the story of two plots to assassinate Nazi political rule during the time of World War II. One story follows a Jewish cinema proprietress who wants revenge and the other is a team of American soldiers who call themselves the "Basterds" and seek justice. This carefully put together film has been nominated for four categories in the 67th Gold Globe Awards which include the Best Director for Tarantino and Best Picture- Drama overall.

The movie is hilarious and touchy at the same time, credit of which goes to the modified script from the novel. All the actors and characters have done justice to the role and the end product is simply superb! A must watch for all the FANs. The movie is to be officially released on youtube and will be the first Bollywood movie which can be legally downloaded for free.

2) Wanted - A movie by dancing sensation Prabhu Deva featuring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia, The movie is a remake of a Telegu movie Pokkiri which was a super hit down south. The movie has a very small script and few peppy songs, it is a story of a gangster falling in love with a pretty girl Jhanvi (Played by Ayesha).

Drama enriches when the secret is unfold that Salama is actually a Police inspector and not a notorious gangster. The movie can be termed the best special effect supported action movie of all time in Bollywood and sets a good platform for future action movies to be. Wanted has grossed more tha 200 Crs and still looks good to make many by sale of CDs and special screenings.

3) Love Aaj Kal - A movie by Hou Hsiao-Hsien featuring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone is a movie based on values of love and relationship in the modern world. Throughout the movie there is a constant comparison of love in times; with flashback of love life in yester years and the modern day.

Saif and Deepika are in a love kind of relationship but fail to realize/accept it and do not want to commit as they don't want to tie each other with terms like "love" or marriage. With different events unfolding and a country wide separation makes both of them realize the bond they share and want it back. Saif takes the first few steps and fails as Deepika is all set to marry someone who seems to be perfect match for her although she is not sure about the love part. After marriage Deepika reliazes that she has made a big mistake and wants to go back to Saif with humble consent from her husband.

However Deepika fails to convey her message to Saif and after multiple twists and many years they get in touch with each other just to realize that love had never changed for them and love is something which grows stronger with time and never fades away.

4) Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - A movie by Rajkumar Santoshi featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif and a special appearance by Salman Khan. The story is about a worthless guy falling in love with girl who in turn loves someone else. Drama unfolds when the girls parent want her to get her married to anoter guy without her wish and Ranbir Kapoor who is in ove with her helps her run away with the guy she loves, although the guy never shows up and Ranbir and Katrina meet again. It is a typical Bollywood movie with peppy numbers, funny gags, hilarious events and lot of sentiments. Katrina Kaif has done an "ok" job in movie as compared to Ranbir Kapoor around whom the entire movie script is built.

5) New York - A Movie by Kabir Khan featuring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Irrfan Khan Is a story of three Indians who got affected by the events folding after 9/11. John Abraham plays a role of a Muslim who is jailed and tortured after being a suspect in the 9/11 case, along with 1500 others. After six months or brutal torture he is found innocent and released but that has left scar in his memories and he starts a real terror organization to take revenge of been assaulted devoid of a reason. Neil Mukesh plays a comprehensive part in the movie and helps to get John back on track and give away all the feelings of avenges.

The new Sherlock Holmes movie is set for a Christmas release in the US and any where from a December 24th to an April 3rd depending on what part of the world you live in. The movie, simply titled Sherlock Holmes, stars Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson.

There have been over 200 movies made featuring the infamous detective since he first appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale, "A Tangled Skein", in 1887. While most have been based on stories written by Conan Doyle, there have been a number that used his characters, but created new stories for the movies. Such is the case with the latest movie, while inspired by the classic tales, it is a story that gives us a vigorous new portrayal of Conan Doyle's renowned characters.

Acclaimed director, Guy Ritchie has brought to life the as of yet unpublished story penned by Lionel Wigram. Wigram and Ritchie present a Sherlock Holmes never seen before. He is much more physically active than his predecessors and is a master at boxing, martial arts and sword play.

Set in London in the year 1891, the movie has Detective Sherlock Holmes and his resolute partner Dr. Watson engaging in a battle of wits and brawn with Lord Blackwood a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. Blackwood is a dark robbed Satan worshiper responsible for the brutal deaths of at least 5 women with more demonic sacrifices on the horizon.

Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman Holmes says has ever bested him and with whom he maintains a tempestuous relationship. The mysterious nemesis, Lord Blackwood, is played by Michael Strong.

Other cast members include: James Fox as Sir Thomas, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan Watson's love interest, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, and Hans Matheson as Lord Coward. Bronagh Gallagher as the Palm Reader, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, William Hope as John Standish, William Houston as Constable Clark, Robert Maillet as Dredger, Robert Stone as the Prizefighter, Joe Egan as Big Joe, David Garrick as McMurdo, James A. Best Kids Movies in 2009 by Popular Demand

When taking a look at what might be the Best Kids Movies in 2009, a number of different ideas can enter in such as strictly the "best" new release movies, the best movie sales in theatres, best by critical acclaim, etc., etc.

I decided to boil this subject down to a simple list of movies that were most popular by sales in the formats of DVD and Blu-Ray - they do in fact include some new releases for the year of 2009, but there are some re-makes of classics this year that come toward the top of the list.

And what a list! Here it is:

1. Disney Pixar Up - Yes, Disney and Pixar have done it again. This is one of the most entertaining Pixar movies yet! The story is about an elderly balloon salesman that decides to fulfill his dream (in a way many people would consider a bit unusual) - and there are some others along for the ride. This is a nice movie for kids of any age and is very amusing!

2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - The sixth year at Hogwarts brings the most adventure yet - Harry discovers his exact role in the final defeat of Voldemort. Another great Harry Potter movie, and a "must see" for any Harry Potter fan.

3. Coraline - This movie has the same director as The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. It might be considered the "darkest" of them all! It is about a young girl named Coraline who desires major changes in her family relationships - but perhaps discovers that her life might not be so bad after all... (As a note, I don't personally recommend this movie for very young kids due to it's "spooky" and more than a bit bizarre nature.)

4. High School Musical 3: Senior Year - In this High School Musical version, Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Chad, Ryan and Taylor are in their final year of high school and they decide together to make it the most unforgettable year yet. A fun movie, especially for young ones who love these characters and/or movies.

5. Pinocchio 70th Anniversary - Here is the first of the "classics" on the list of the Best Kids Movies 2009, and it's a delightful movie for any age. The re-make of this movie is rather spectacular, and the message of courage, honesty and integrity is always a good one.

6. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Yes, here is another movie on the hottest sellers for kids this year! It's impressive how the movie appears and sounds in digital format - especially Blu-Ray. This is a favorite for very young kids and little ladies too.

7. Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs - The plot thickens for the unlikely prehistoric crew when Mannie and Ellie are expecting a little Mammoth in their family. It creates some interesting changes in the crew and some rather amusing events take place. Fun movie!

8. The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary - This is the third and final of the classic movies on this list and is an amazing re-make of the original. In my opinion this is another movie that is not the best for very young children - that wicked old witch can be just a tad bit too scary, but is a fun movie for families and kids about 6 or 7 and older.

9. Monsters vs. Aliens - This is one of the cutest newer movies on this list! The theme has an interesting twist - what if monsters were actually the good guys? A fun choice and a nice job by Reese Witherspoon who plays the main character, Susan Murphy.

10. Bolt - Personally I think this is one of the cutest movies I have seen for kids. It is about a dog who stars as a superhero in film and begins to take the role a bit too seriously. The plot thickens when he loses his owner and has to go out on his own to find her. John Travolta plays the role of Bolt and does a fabulous job!

Some may disagree with one or more of the movies above in terms of what they consider to be the "Best Kids Movies 2009", but strictly in terms of popular demand the above selections appear to comprise the definitive list. Speaking on a personal level I believe that these are some of the best movies for kids ever!

Avatar - Biggest Movie of 2009?

One could say it has it all: the action scenes, the love story, the creative futuristic plot, and perhaps most noteworthy-special effects beyond what even today's high-tech society is accustomed to seeing.

Considering that Avatar reportedly cost close to $300 million to make, movie goers expected to be impressed with its animation. Thanks to its stereoscopic film making (new cameras were specially designed for this movie), Avatar boasts the most cutting edge motion-capture techniques ever used. While the movie is available in regular 2-D, most critics agree that it needs to be watched in 3-D (or even IMAX 3-D, which is shown in some areas), to truly give it justice. Unlike corny 3-D movies of the past, the fluidity of Avatar's scenes sets a new standard that will be difficult to surpass.

While almost all viewers agree that Avatar is worthy of its high-tech praise, not all are quite so eager to give accolades to the story line. Set in 2154, humans are mining for precious minerals on the distant satellite planet of Pandora. In order to excrete these resources, they must disturb the planet's ecosystem and its indigenous "people," the Na'vi. To placate the natives, scientists develop humanoids (a.k.a. avatars) to interact with them. It quickly becomes obvious that the scientists and humanoids are the "good guys" trying to find peaceful resolutions with the indigenous people and the big corporation and their paid military forces are the "bad guys" trying to exploit the planet for personal gain. The love affair between two main characters, an ex-marine who becomes an avatar and one of the native Na'vi, offers the dramatic twist to keep viewers engaged.

Some see Avatar's plot as overly simplistic. Others think it sends an overt liberal message due to its anti-war and pro-environment stance. Still others choose not to read too much into it and appreciate it for what it is-a wonderfully-made fantasy movie that is incredibly fun to watch.

Is Avatar the best science fiction movie of all time? Is it the epic breakthrough of this generation? Is it even deserving of all this hype? Whatever the opinion, there's no denying that it stirs up a lot of conversation and continues to draw people to the theatres. And for that reason, Avatar cannot be ignored as the biggest hit of 2009. As for the rest, only time will tell.

Star Trek - Best Movie of 2009?

If you aren't one of the legions of Trekkies that follow this classic science fiction series like a religion, and thus dismissed the latest installment in the long running movie franchise out of hand, you are probably pretty surprised to see this film show up as a possible candidate for best movie of 2009. In fact, you are probably thinking that I am probably a Trekkie myself and that I am letting my personal bias cloud my judgment. However, let me assure you that nothing could be further from the truth.

I watched the original series as a child, and I'll admit to enjoying Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. However, beyond that I wasn't much of a fan of the series at all. I've only seen about half the movies, and never got into spin-offs like Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. As a result it was with little anticipation that I went to check out the latest film. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be a vast understatement.

This isn't your father's Star Trek. Gritty, intense, dark and violent the movie is a complete reinvention of Gene Roddenberry's original vision, and is very reminiscent of the film Batman Begins that breathed new life into that flagging comic book franchise a few years back.

That being said the movie has plenty of light moments as well, and you'll find yourself just as entertained by the humor in the film as you are engrossed by the action. Long time fans of the series who are "in the know" will find even more funny moments, being privy to some of the inside jokes, and homages to the original series that most of us will miss.

The film is actually a prequel to the other movies, taking us back to a time before Kirk and Spock and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise ever met. The casting of the film is brilliant, and the actors portraying Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu are all believable as younger versions of the actors who played the crew on the original series.

This time around the crew isn't battling Klingons, but is instead taking on the rogue captain of a powerful Romulan ship from the future that has the horrific ability to destroy entire planets. I'm sure we can look forward to some Kirk vs. Klingon action in the inevitable sequels however.

Overall, Star Trek is a film that should hold nearly universal appeal to film-goers everywhere. With tons of action, plenty of laughs, and a surprising amount of emotional depth it is a movie that is hard to find flaw in. Sure, the scientists in the crowd might take some issue with some of the time travel paradoxes that occur in the film, but overall this is a fantastic movie and is a powerful challenger for the coveted title of best film of 2009.

Five Excellent 2009 Albums

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

This album topped most "best of 2009" lists so it should be no surprise to see it here. I've not been a huge fan of this band in the past because I've found their albums difficult to get through. With this album I feel they found the right balance of experimentation and quality songwriting. I think this actually makes their experimental side more effective because I find myself drawn into their songs more easily (and thus I am more thoroughly in their "sound world" which is an interesting place to be.)

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

As cool as MPP is, I think I actually prefer Bitte Orca. This is a demanding listen but it's also a very rewarding listen. The best thing about it? I have little idea on how to really adequately describe this music. It doesn't fit easily into any particular genre.

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic

I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan but I was disappointed by At War with the Mystics and I've actually become more and more disappointed with Mystics as I've listened to it over the last few years. It's just not a good album (their first since their not so great 1980s albums that I can say that about.)

Thankfully Embryonic is an entirely new beginning for the band and it's a very exciting one at that. No, it's not a return to form (that's missing the point.) It's something new. And the Lips are always at their best when they're doing something new.

You should be warned, this is not easy listening. If you only know the Lips from their past few albums you may find this thing unlistenable. I think it's the kind of album you either love or you hate. I love it.

The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You

This is a bit "easy listening" compared to the first three albums in this article but not everything has to be "difficult." These are good songs with catchy melodies, beautiful harmonies, and insightful lyrics. This is very good music. My one complaint about this album (and about this band's albums in general) is that it's a bit long.

Twilight New Moon Soundtrack

I'm not a fan of the movies but this is a very good soundtrack. What I like most about it is that it exposes a whole lot of non mainstream radio artists (such as Grizzly Bear & Thom Yorke) to a far wider audience then they normally have. This soundtrack has sold a huge amount of copies by indie rock standards.

A lot of teenage girls who are completely ignorant of good music bought this soundtrack and really listened to artistically minded music for the first time in their lives. That's cool. Maybe some of them will throw out their Taylor Swift & Miley Cyrus albums and buy some good stuff instead! (I'm not holding my breath, but it's a cool thing to imagine.)

Best Comedy Movies of 2009

Some most-expected drama movies and action movies failed to draw audiences to the theater, but the comedies of 2009 were well able to do good box office business. Perhaps the recession and economic downturn make people seek laughter during these stress-filled times. Though a few of the comedies of 2009 didn't have that aura which makes them in the list of funniest movies ever, except Hangover, they somehow kept the box office ringing.

Here is my list of the best comedy movies of 2009:

The Hangover:

This movie by Warner Bros Pictures has earned good money, but not, off course like Avatar. Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms in 'The Hangover' could keep you laughing for along time. The movie received great reviews and appreciation from different corners of the world. It has been a smash hit worldwide. The film could set a new record for an R-rated comedy, crashing the record set by Beverly Hills Cop nearly 25 years ago. A loud funny movie that every bachelor who wishes to go for a wild bachelors party must watch.

Zombieland:

Columbia Pictures released this apocalyptic zombie film which put up stiff competition to 'The Hangover'. The way Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg fight each other is really hysterical. A smart script, good acting by newcomers like Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin add flavor to the tone of this comedy. It is a kind of perfect escape from reality and you will have fun watching this movie at home with friends.

Fantastic Mr. Fox:

This is a Fox Searchlight release and is directed by Wes Anderson. Although the trailer didn't raise that much initial interest with the audiences, the movie didn't disappoint at the theater. There is nothing too freaky in the plot, and the movie comes to life as you watch it. This is an animated film for adults as the humor is a bit too much over the heads of the kid crowd. A witty and highly entertaining movie for the 2009 movie year!

Up:

This is another animated movie from Disney/Pixar. Millions already have fallen in love with the old fellow who flies with balloons and the small obnoxious kid explorer who accompanies the old man on this adventure. The movie is touching and funny, and the animation is gorgeous to look at. It takes you on an emotional journey as well as keeps tickling your funny side to make you stick to the screen.

500 Days of Summer:

Another release from Fox Searchlight. This is a romantic comedy and one of the best intelligent romantic comedies of the 2009 film year! Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a hard working greeting card writer who believes in love at first sight while Zooey Deschanel, a free-spirited woman, doesn't. Find out what clicks between the two in this comedy.

Some other comedy movies worth watching of 2009 are 'The Proposal', 'The Informant' and 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.' All should not disappoint.

Some of the Best Movies of 2009

With the Oscars coming up, everyone is heading to the movie theater, the video rental store, or requesting Netflix, in an attempt to experience the most critically acclaimed films of the past year. Instead of putting your name on the waiting list at Blockbuster, along with the rest of the neighborhood, why not make the switch to satellite TV? If you haven't seen any of the nominated films, and only have time for a few, here are my recommendations (in no particular order).

Avatar (James Cameron and Jon Landau) - Avatar has captured the attention of the entire world. As someone who isn't much of a fan of science fiction movies, I didn't have much of a desire to see Avatar, but after about a month of hearing all of the hype, I decided I needed to see what it was all about. I was not disappointed. The film connects gorgeous special effects with a powerful message about humanity. Avatar is set in the future in a faraway planet called Pandora where nature and corporate capitalism are confronted with one another when an American corporation arrives in pursuit of the valuable minerals found on Pandora. Although the message is touching, it is the visuals that make this movie worth watching. With the beauty of high definition television, you will not be disappointed.

The Blind Side (John Lee Hancock) - The best part of this heartwarming film is Sandra Bullock's incredible performance as a wealthy woman who takes in an impoverished high school football star and helps him achieve in a world that seems to be working against him. Although we have seen many similar stories, this one is portrayed extremely well. The film has been blended with a sports metaphor, football to be specific. Michael Oher's main responsibility on the football field is to protect the quarterback's blindside from attackers, which is parallel to his role to protect his new family as well. This film is intelligently crafted and can't be missed.

Invictus (Clint Eastwood) - This inspirational film based on a true story will inevitably evoke intense emotions in its audience. With superb performances by Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of the South African rugby team, this epic film will surely be the recipient of an Oscar or two. This sports drama tells the tale of how Mandela and the captain of the rugby team came together in an effort to unite the apartheid-torn nation during the 1995 World Cup. This is a film that is more enjoyable with the beauty and realism of HD television.

Best Movies of 2009 So Far - Top 10 Films of the Year Counted Down

I realize that 2009 is far from over, but since we are through the summer blockbuster season I figured it would be an appropriate time to come up with a list of the top 10 best movies of 2009 (so far). There are still a few big releases to hit like Sherlock Holmes, so there may be some slight alterations when all is said and done, but overall I am pretty satisfied that this is just about how things will shake out. Without further ado, here are my picks for the best films of the year so far:

10 - I Love You Man - Paul Rudd of Anchorman fame and Jason Segel of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and TV's How I Met Your Mother team up in this classic buddy movie about a guy who gets engaged only to discover he has no friends to stand up for him at his wedding. Under urging from his fiance Peter Klaven (Rudd) goes on a series of "man dates" in a quest to find a friend and a potential best man. After several spectacular failures he accidentally meets up with Sidney Fife (Segel), a painfully honest, but loyal friend. Though seemingly polar opposites the pair hits it off immediately, mostly due to a mutual love of the rock band Rush. However, Peter's fiance Zooey (Rashida Jones) is less than impressed Sidney's influence on her husband-to-be.

The movie is clever and consistently funny throughout, and features a great supporting cast including Jon Favreau, J.K. Simmons, Jaime Pressley, Andy Sandberg and Jane Curtin. If you missed this in theaters make sure to pick it up on DVD as it is one of the funniest movies of the year.

9 - Coraline - One of the best movies of the year is also one of the most unique. Featuring the voice acting of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher and Ian McShane Coraline is an animated film that is quite different than the usual offerings you see from Pixar and Dreamworks. Fanning voices main character Coraline Jones who discovers a secret door in her house, walks through it, and discovers an alternate reality to her real life. The animation is top notch, featuring stop motion stereoscopic 3D, and combined with the voice acting, and the intriguing plot the movie is destined to be an instant classic that will be enjoyed for years to come by children and adults alike.

8 - Watchmen - To be honest when I heard this movie was coming out I thought it would have ended up a lot higher on a list of the best films of the year. That's not to say I was disappointed - I enjoyed the movie immensely - just not quite as much as I thought I would.

Much different than typical superhero films like Spiderman and X-men this film definitely had a darker, grittier side in the spirit of a film like Sin City. The movie isn't quite as action-packed as I expected and tends to wander and/or drag on in parts. However, the acting is top notch and the narration by Rorschach (Jackie Earle Hayley) is particularly good. For fans of the graphic novels this movie might be something of a letdown, but it is still much better than big budget films like GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

7 - Public Enemies - Johnny Depp is one of the most versatile actors working in Hollywood today. Whether he is playing a crazed pirate, a demonic barber, or in this case, legendary villain John Dillinger he is always completely believable. Public Enemies is a very good film, though it will not challenge Goodfellas or other films of that caliber as one of the best gangster movies ever made. Much like Watchmen the film seems to drag in places, but there is enough action throughout to keep views from getting too antsy. Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis isn't as good as Depp, but does a serviceable job.

Despite some minor flaws Public Enemies is still very much worth viewing at least once, and the set design and the digital imagery in the film are as good as it gets.

6 - The Hurt Locker - Of all the movies on this list, with perhaps the exception of Coraline, The Hurt Locker is the most unheralded. With names like Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes and even Evangeline Lily of television's Lost there is decent star power, but for whatever reason the film didn't get the promotion that it deserved. As emotional as it is thrilling The Hurt Locker gives the audience a vividly portrayed view of an elite unit that has the unenviable job (to say the least) of disarming bombs in the middle of battle. If you are among the many who haven't heard of this film definitely check it out when it hits DVD.

5 - Inglorious Basterds - There was a lot of hype surrounding this movie, and with director Quentin Tarantino and Holly A-list actor Brad Pitt attached to the film, the high anticipation hardly comes as a shock. Tarantino is back in a big way, after lukewarm reviews of his last film Death Proof, with this tale of a group of Jewish-American soldiers who spread terror through the enemy's ranks by brutally killing Nazis. Pitt is stellar in the lead role as Lt. Aldo Raine, and though the film is over 2.5 hours long you'll never find it dragging. If you hurry you can still catch it in theaters. Otherwise you'll have to wait the long months until it sees the light of day on DVD.

4 - Up - As good as Coraline was, it couldn't dethrone the 800 pound gorilla Pixar for the title of the best animated movie of 2009. Pixar, much like Johnny Depp, just never seem to make a bad movie, and no matter how much praise is heaped upon them for one movie they somehow seem to outdo themselves in the next.

Ed Asner, who was so good as Lou Grant on TV so many years ago, proves he still hasn't lost his acting ability, turning in a top notch performance as the voice of Carl Fredricksen, a cantankerous old man who sets out on an incredible adventure in the twilight of his life to fulfill a lifelong promise to his deceased wife. The movie, like all Pixar films, has plenty of humor, but also has moments that will have you blinking back tears. If you are a fan of Pixar films then you've no doubt already seen this one, but if you'd dismissed it as a kid's movie you are doing yourself a disservice, and you should make sure to pick it up on DVD (or Blu-Ray) the day it hits stores.

3 - District 9 - Though there are many that are calling this film the greatest science fiction movie of all time I wouldn't go quite that far. Still, it is an incredible movie and a stunning debut for director Neil Blomkamp. The movie is unusual right from the start for the simple fact of its setting. The story takes place in South Africa, a refreshing departure from other alien "invasion" movies that always seem to take place on U.S. soil. As you can see I've put the word invasion in quotes. This isn't your typical movie where army troops and a few extraordinary civilians must defend Earth from annihilation by unwelcome extra terrestrial visitors. Instead, the aliens purpose is unknown, and they've been segregated and forced into slums under the watchful eye of the military. I won't get into too many specific details, but suffice it to say the film is much different than any sci-fi movie that I've ever seen.

2 - The Hangover - While this might not have enjoyed the critical acclaim of several of the other films on this list, The Hangover deserves its spot as it is one of the funniest comedy movies to come along in years. Starring Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and the outrageously funny Zach Galifianakis the film is about 2 buddies (and one soon to be brother-in-law) who take their friend Doug to Las Vegas for his bachelor party. As often happens in Vegas (even in real life) things get quickly out of hand and after a night of debauchery the sorry crew wakes up and discovers they've lost their friend. Unable to recall what happened they must try and retrace their steps from the previous night to try and find Doug and get him home in time for his wedding.

Don't forget to stay right to the end of this one. The slideshow during the credits is just as funny as the main film.

1 - Star Trek - With so many installments of this venerable sci-fi classic already it seemed unlikely that yet another chapter would come up at number one on a list of the top 10 best movies of 2009. Yet here it is. Why, you ask? Quite simply, this isn't your father's Star Trek. The series has been completely reinvented, much in the way that Batman Begins was a few years back. Sam Rockwell Gets The Winning Season - Movie Review

We've always thought that Sam Rockwell has had a curious career ranging all over the place and recently with The Moon and now The Winning Season, he seems that he wants some serious recognition playing an alcoholic looking for some redemption.

The Winning Season was a bit of a critic's darling during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival for an indie sports drama, but then like many acquisitions at this festival, Sam Rockwell's film languished but is finally getting a small release this week September 3, 2010. We saw this last year and enjoyed it as we do sports movies, especially football. It reminded us of a cross between Hoosiers, a more dramatic Bad News Bears (the original, not the godawful Billy Bob Thornton remake), Bad Santa (where Billy Bob Thornton was brilliant) and Promised Land (for those that saw Meg Ryan's very first movie before she became America's darling).

The Winning Season is so much about growing up with all that hope that you can be anything and do anything you want; your possibilities are endless, but then something happens along the way and the possibilities just don't arise. Or they have arisen and you were too scared to take that opportunity and wound up living the life you hate and trying to push kids into your dream and damning them for having the chance to do it.

In The Winning Season, Sam Rockwell plays Bill, a former coach turned professional alcoholic who's now a busboy at a local TGIF style restaurant...at least it's not the dreaded Olive Garden! One night, an old friend of his, who's a principal at the local high school stops in to offer him a job coaching basketball. When Bill realizes it's for a girls basketball team, he's insulted at first but naturally takes the job. He's a total asshole and throughout the film stays true to his character and the girls on the team grow to love him for who he is.

Best movies ever liked The Winning Season for not getting to much into the insulin inducing syrupy mushy redemption film. The film paces itself wonderfully and we slowly watch as Bill realizes that while he's helping the team progress, they in turn are helping him heal into a human being again. The Winning Season is worth checking out.

The Best Hindi Movies 2009

A message for newcomers to the world of Hindi film: you have a lot of catching up to do. For those of you who are turned off by the thought of wading through a ton of very good, but low fidelity by today's standards, movies, check out some of the many newer movies available for viewing these days. Although many of these have started to depart from the more classic Hindi cinema where romance, comedy, family, and friendship were all present in one movie, they still make for some damn fun and interesting entertainment. Here are the 3 best Hindi movies of 2009 and what they are about ("best" in this case means highest grossing:

1. 3 Idiots

This film broke all box office records for opening day on its release, and went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time in India (if inflation is not adjusted for). A buddy movie that offers lots of laughs, the movie centers around three former college buddies who are on a quest to win the love of the girl-next door while posing as the grandson of a blind couple. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and featuring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor as Rancho and Pia, respectively.

2. Wanted

A film which centers on the balance between organized crime and the law in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), featuring cold-blooded hitman Radhe (played by Salman Khan) who straddles both worlds. The police commisioner's daughter, Jhanvi (Ayesha Tatiak) falls for Radhe, our mafioso gangster, and her world is rocked as she realizes that people are not necessarily all good. Wanted is a modern-day tale of these betrayals and complex relationships which go unseen by the average person. Directed by Prabhu Deva.

3. Love Aaj Kal

Translated into English as "Love These Days", this film is about the timelessness of love. In it, we follow Jai and Meera's relationship from togetherness to separation, and whether it can transcend oceans, time, and even other partners! A modern day couple living in London, they decide to grant each other the freedom to follow their own life paths as opposed to tying each other down. So it is that Meera heads back to India and starts dating her boss, Vikram, while Jai remains in London chasing his dream job in San Francisco and also starting a relationship with another woman. This film has special appeal to those modern young people who either know what it's like or are currently dealing with a long term-relationship and commitment and job issues.

These three movies are a great and accessible introduction to the world of Hindi movies. They each contain overlapping elements such as love and friendship, but each of the movies on this list identifies more with one specific genre than others, which has not always been the case when it comes to Bollywood movies.
